From smart fridges to smart phones, radar sensors to robot vacuum cleaners, our houses are filled with technologies called the internet of things (IoT).
The applications for IoT in social care are numerous, with both specialist care and consumer technology being increasingly used.
In this practical session we’ll look at case studies of how this technology is being used and how to have conversations with the people you support about whether this technology is right for them. We’ll provide guidance on how to keep up to date with new technology, the benefits to those you support and how to measure if these technologies are successful. We’ll also discuss the ethics of data and digital technology and connectivity concerns.

- Discover how to work with the people you support, their carers and loved ones to identify which technology is right for them
- Understand how the internet of things is already being used in social care
- Find out the benefits and risks of using IoT
- Learn about sensor based technologies such as binary sensors, security and surveillance, GPS and geotagging, assistive technology and technology enabled care (including regulated care technology), and telecare and telehealth (including remote monitoring)
