Effective leadership and management contribute to the creation of a positive workplace culture and can have a huge impact on employees feeling valued, which is key to retention.

Managers engage with individuals and teams through several ways including: the induction process, supervision, appraisals, performance development plans and reflections on practice. It is also important to use these processes to check your workplace values are understood, being upheld and are having a positive impact.

Top tips:

  • Senior management should engage with all leaders and managers to ensure that they have the skills to effectively support staff and manage people, acting on any actions in a timely manner. Urge leaders and managers to do the same with their teams and staff (see more information on learning and development in the Promoting career development section).
  • Network with colleagues, working in partnership to achieve common goals or seeking solutions to common challenges. Peer networks, like ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù’s registered manager network, give managers the chance to network with like-minded colleagues who face similar, everyday challenges.
  • Model positive workplace culture and provide constructive and respectful feedback to employees.

Case studies

What we did:

Ensured that senior managers are highly visible and proactively engage with staff at all organisational levels.

Why we did it:

To support staff and take them on Darlington’s journey, which has a strong focus on culture to support and encourage staff to be adventurous in the practice.

How we did it:

Social Care staff met regularly with members of the leadership team through staff forums and carousels where there was an opportunity to collectively discuss and agree priorities and plan the actions to achieve these.

Workloads were carefully managed by forward planning to ensure that reviews are allocated evenly throughout the year and that the relevant resources were available. Leaders have created a culture that encourages high challenge and good support.

The results:

This has helped create a strong sense of shared vision and allows for joint problem solving. Managers are very clear about the culture they wish to encourage and invest their time in; “Knowing Ourselves, Knowing our Outcomes, Knowing our Children, Knowing our Adults”. There is recognition of the importance of good staff support mechanisms.
