Why we鈥檙e championing registered managers in March

As we launch our Championing Registered Managers campaign, our Director of Engagement Georgina Turner discusses why this campaign is important in celebrating and supporting registered managers.

Registered managers are at the heart of their organisations.

They play a vital role in ensuring that high-quality care and support is delivered to the people who need it and are a major influence in ensuring their staff are happy and effective in their roles.

Whilst pretty much every registered manager has this in common the variation with and across roles is huge; no two days are the same, and for managers working across different settings and different sizes of organisations their roles can look very different.

We’re currently working with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) on developing a Care Workforce Pathway for the adult social care sector. The pathway will set out clearly what a career in social care means and the level of knowledge, experience and skills required to deliver high-quality, personalised, care and support.

We’re currently working on four role categories, which includes registered and deputy managers. Contained within each role category is a defined set of behaviours, knowledge and skills expected of someone to work at that level. During the spring we’ll be connecting with managers to gain their insights and input into the development of these categories.

We know from our close connections with registered managers across England that they find their roles incredibly rewarding, but at the same time challenging - it can be a lonely job at times.

That’s why a key component of the support we offer is focused on networking and peer connection.

Our local networks offer registered managers the opportunity to come together with peers in their local area to discuss learnings, successes, challenges, and solutions. Feedback about these networks tell us that managers find these peer connections incredibly beneficial in feeling less alone and in gaining new perspectives and ideas.

Our membership offer for registered managers offers managers the chance to participate in mentoring, either as a mentor or mentee, as well as providing access to exclusive discounts and resources.

‘The care exchange’ podcast, now in its fourth series is another popular support offer for registered managers. The podcast allows managers to hear from peers about their experiences, which again supports managers to feel part of a wider community and to learn from others.

It can be lonely place at times being the manager and knowing other people are in the same position or have the same issues is reassuring.

Membership has accorded me relevant information and resources to carry out my duties. It also gives me inclusivity and a sense of belonging, eliminating all fears of being alone with regards to the Care Quality Commission inspections.

Being a member has always given me the confidence to ask any questions as they are answered carefully and with a wide breadth of knowledge. It helps to know we are not alone as registered managers.

Being a registered manager is such a busy role so we’ve done our best to put all the key things in one place. We’ll be spotlighting all this information and support throughout our campaign.

The purpose of our Championing Registered Managers campaign is to both celebrate and support registered managers in their important roles. We’ll be sharing blogs and articles from registered managers and other social care experts which provide real life insights into the registered manager role, along with tips and support.

The campaign will also focus on particular topics that managers have told us are of key concern to them right now – this includes changes to Care Quality Commission inspection as well as managing change more broadly, and succession planning.

With 32% of registered managers reaching retirement age in the next 15 years, succession planning is vital in growing the registered managers of the future.
